Cape Schanck Lighthouse gets a New Website

Cape Schanck Lighthouse is an iconic location on the Mornington Peninsula just 90 minutes from Melbourne Australia. The light station has been functioning for over 150 years – protecting ships passing the dangerous waters of the Bass Strait as the enter and leave Port Phillip Bay. Cape Schanck Lighthouse is in a national park with amazing beaches, great walks and areas for families to enjoy a quiet picnic in a pristine natural setting.

The old lightstation was pretty far away from everything when it was built in 1859. So, there was a cottage for the light keeper’s family and an extra room for inspectors when they came to visit. Over time, additional accommodation was added for workers.

Posting on Forums relevant to your website

Some people think that if you build it they will come or make a website and get instant traffic. I wish that were true, but life ain’t that easy.

We recently set up a website for 90 Mile Beach House & Villas in Golden Beach Victoria. The location is in the East Gippsland Lakes area not too far from Sale and down the coast from Lakes Entrance.

Anyway, Richard (the owner) has be very proactive looking at groups that come to his area and then promoting his accommodation in their forums. He’s obviously done it well because he got a couple of hundred visits. Links like this can be taken as spam or they can serve genuine interest. In his example, he knew of a Kombi Club that makes regular runs to his area.

I wish all of our customers would do the same. We try to help them where possible with inbound links, but the fact is that they need to stay involved. Inbound links are very important and when they resonate with buyers they’re worth gold.

Be sure to check the rules of the forum. Some will allow you to post links to websites. Some will also allow you to place links to websites in your signature.

Should Albury Motels use Reciprical links for SEO?

Interesting question came up today where Janice from Australia Park Motel in Albury NSWasked how to add a link to her home page for a local Albury Wodonga website.

Adding links is pretty easy. The main question is Why? The website requested it, or required it, because they want to develop their inbound links. Of course, the same is true for Australia Park Motel. Inbound links are very important to every websites success with search engine ranking.

But, these are reciprocal links (I link to you and you link to me). Having reciprocal links is not bad, but Google no longer gives them much value. The real sticky point for me is when a website is a paid listing and then they also ask for a reciprocated link. I don’t think you should give it IMHO.

Also, assuming Google valued this style of reciprocated link highly, would there be any consequence to adding a link? I would always be wary of links to a website that generally advertises the area – including competitive businesses? In some cases they are really valuable references for our customers.

Links are good. We need to help our visitors find good information. A good website always links to good information because that is part of giving service.

We also did a website for Commodore Motor Inn in Albury. Should we link this motel in Alburyto Australia Park’s website? Here you are going to say, these guys are direct competitors – the answer is no. Maybe. But they are also members of Golden Chain Motels. Perhaps as a group they like to work together and help each other? Then, links make good sense.

So, if the links make sense because you just want to have them and you think they add value – then do it. Reciprocated Links won’t hurt your website. Well, that’s not totally true. Links to ’bad websites’ may hurt you because Google would see links to porn or other negative websites in a bad light. But Hey, that’s pretty obvious anyway.

Cootamundra Motel Website for Southern Comfort Motor Inn

We’ve just added a new website for Southern Comfort Motor Inn in Cootamundra NSW. This one uses a black background which seems to make the image pop off the screen.

Again, we were able to get this one up and indexed by Google for generic terms like ‘motel in Cootamundra’ within a week. It is hard to know whether that is just because the accommodation websites in Cootamundra are not well organized or that we just did a really good job. I like to think we did good!

Country Roads Motor Inn Narrandera NSW

Recently added a new website for Country Roads Motor Inn Narrandera, which has done very well with search engines. It looks like adding a new website to Google Local Business listing for a small town in Australia will place the website very quickly towards the top of search results.

Mick provided some good images from the visitor info centre in Narrandera as well as some pictures he has taken and they seem to bring together a good snapshot of what the property and town has to offer. So far so good!

Botaba Bed and Breakfast in Port Stephens

Botaba Bed and Breakfasthas been an Online Bookings customer for many years. We’ve just helped them upgrade their website presence with a new website built on BurgundySky. This website incorporates a few new techniques using iframes.

An iframe is a way to have a web-page inside a web page. There are a couple of page types that open without the normal navigation features: Image Gallery, Map and Booking System. In their natural form, they open like a pop up. That works, but you lack some advantages such as being able to use Page Titles, add content useful for keywords and they just look better opened in the regular website.

In order to create content that is linked in an iframe, you would first create the original page and save it to a ‘hidden catagory’. Then, create the page which will have the inserted iframe. You can write whatever is needed above or below the iframe. To insert the iframe, you must switch to code view and insert the following:

Change the src= to your targeted content and select the apropriate height. Save your page and see if it worked. If not, try resizing the original content or changing the size of the iframe.

By setting the width to equal a percentage rather than a fixed number, the frame will automatically size to fit the available space. As you change templates, your space changes as well – sometimes breaking the display of the frame. The height must always be a fixed number.

I personally don’t like iframes with content that doesn’t fit the space. In the code example above, I added scrolling=”no”. If the content was oversized for the window, then scrolling = yes would allow the viewer to slide a bar from side to side or up and down to view all content.

Pages change with the template. So, if you change the theme of a website be sure to check all pages to see if they still look good.
